Your gut controls how effectively that you lose weight and it also has a pivotal role in your metabolism. A healthy gut has higher levels of ‘flora’ which are essential for hormone production, vitamin production in the intestinal tract and a strong immune system. Research has indicated that your gut flora levels differ depending on your current bodyweight and leaner subjects had higher levels and a healthier gut health. We have millions of types of bacteria with each one having its own impact on metabolism and your appetite e.g. ghrelin. Healthy guts have higher levels of ghrelin which is the hunger controlling hormone that is made by your stomach. Ghrelin travels to your brain and impacts on your desire to eat. People who are overweight can have a malfunctioning ghrelin mechanism which can lead to food cravings because it has a role in maintaining your blood sugars within a healthy range. A change in your gut health can speed up fatty acid and carbs absorption. With a leaky gut you could eat the same calories as someone with a healthy gut but the body deals with the calories differently. Subsequently, more of the calories will be stored as fat because a ‘leaky gut’ is associated with poor insulin control. One of insulin’s key roles is to store body fat!
